In a perfect world, every species imaginable would live in Overyield. Till then, our team must be strategic with the species we greenlight for template development. In considering which crops to templatize in Overyield, we weigh a handful of considerations, including but not limited to:
- Macroeconomic factors - The commercial viability of a species is of chief importance. Considerations such as the Total Addressable, Total Serviceable, and Total Attainable Markets for a crop impact company strategy and thus template development.
- Geography - As a US-based team, we generally prioritize economically important native species, with a preference towards temperate species well suited to the climates of Hudson, NY and Mayesville, KY -- our two agroforestry hubs. Of course, as our team expands into new geographies, we will prioritize species suited to these regions.
- Agroecological benefits - Stacking functions is our bread and butter. Species with a proven agroforestry track record — those that balance ecosystem service provision with agronomic productivity within multi-functional landscapes— are great candidates for templatization. From nitrogen-fixing, pollinator-pleasing, shade-providers like Locust to erosion-controlling, stress-tolerant, commercializable species like Chestnut, we are always seeking new species that fill any of the following roles within agroecosystems — water filtration, microclimate creation, windbreak provision, habitat creation, soil improvement, livestock support, nurse cropping, carbons sequestration, etc.
- Customer needs - Our customer base spans multiple countries and continents, each with its own biogeographical context. We try to prioritize crops that will be relevant to this wide customer base — species like apples and chestnut whose broad, multicultural appeal and internal genetic diversity make them suitable from coast to coast, country to country. Of course, one size hardly fits all, so templates should be adapted to the agroecological nuances of a given place. We love to make our customers happy, so you can always suggest crop templates for development here.
- Data partnerships - We partner with agronomy experts around the world to create new crop templates. The terms of these partnerships vary contextually - e.g. exchanging Overyield licenses for crop templates, payment for template development, etc. If you a technical service provider, farmer, extension professional or crop agronomy expert, we’d love to partner - Let us know which crops you’d like to templatize, and we’ll get a conversation going.
